Instagram image size guide

Instagram Story size, Reel covers and post dimensions.

The right crop matters more than simply stretching an image to fit. Use this practical reference to prepare tall Stories, Reel covers and feed photos, keep important text visible and choose between cropping or padding.

Quick reference: which image dimensions should you use?

These are useful export sizes for the preset layouts in InstaTimestamp's image resizer. They aren't a promise that every screen inside the Instagram app will show the full image without cropping.

Instagram Story size: why 1080 × 1920?

A 9:16 vertical image fills a typical phone-sized Story canvas. Exporting at 1080 × 1920 pixels gives you a practical high-resolution starting point for photography, text graphics or announcements. Bigger source files can still be useful if you plan to crop them.

Using the right aspect ratio helps prevent unexpected side bars or zoomed-in cropping. It doesn't guarantee text visibility: app controls, profile information and interface overlays occupy part of the screen.

Where should important text go?

Keep your headline, logo, buttons and key details comfortably away from the very top and bottom. The exact interface varies across devices and Instagram features, so there is no single fixed safe-area boundary that works everywhere.

How should a Reel cover be sized?

Start with a 9:16 image, just like a Story. But a Reel cover can appear as a smaller or differently cropped preview in profile grids, feeds and other Instagram surfaces. Design for more than one crop.

  • Put the main subject near the center of the full image.
  • Use larger text that stays readable in a small thumbnail.
  • Avoid relying on details at the far left, right, top or bottom.
  • Check the cover inside Instagram before publishing; its preview may not match the full-screen artwork.

If a photo is originally horizontal, don't stretch it into a tall canvas. Use the free resizer to choose Crop, Fit or Blur Fill.

Crop, Fit or Blur Fill: what's the difference?

Crop to fill

Fills the target canvas without empty space. Some edges will be removed. Best when the important subject can stay inside the crop.

Fit with a background

Keeps the complete original image visible. Extra space gets a background color. Useful for logos, posters, product photos and text-heavy artwork that you cannot cut.

Blur the background

Also preserves the full foreground image, but fills unused space with a blurred version of the photo. Helpful when you want a vertical Story from a landscape source without harsh empty bars.

Practical rule: Use Crop for immersive full-screen photos; Fit for posters or graphics with writing; Blur Fill when you need to preserve a landscape photograph in a vertical frame.

How to avoid blurry or stretched uploads

  1. Start with a reasonably sharp source. A tiny image won't gain genuine detail just because you export it at 1080 pixels wide.
  2. Maintain proportions. Stretching a square portrait to 9:16 distorts faces and shapes. Crop or add background instead.
  3. Preview the focal point. After cropping, check that faces, products and important text are still fully visible.
  4. Choose a suitable format. JPEG works well for most photographs; PNG can be useful for text and graphics. Output file size varies with content and quality.
  5. Re-check inside Instagram. Instagram can compress uploaded images or display different crops in different parts of its app.

Resize an Instagram image in three steps

  1. Open InstaTimestamp's Instagram Image Resizer and select a JPG, PNG or WebP file.
  2. Choose your target size: Story/Reel cover, square, portrait or landscape. Select Crop, Fit or Blur Fill and adjust the preview.
  3. Download the finished image and review it before uploading to Instagram.

The resizer performs image processing locally in your browser. It works on still images and Reel cover art; it does not edit or resize video files.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1080 × 1920 good for Instagram Stories?

Yes. It's a practical 9:16 export size for full-screen vertical Story images. Keep important text away from UI overlays.

Can I use a square photo as an Instagram Story?

Yes, but a square image does not naturally fill a tall Story frame. Crop it, place it over a background, or use a blurred background to preserve the whole picture.

Will a Reel cover look the same in the profile grid?

Not necessarily. Instagram may crop the artwork differently in thumbnail and full-screen views. Keep your main subject and text near the center and preview before publishing.

Does the tool resize Reel videos?

No. It resizes images and still cover art. Video resizing needs a separate workflow.

Do I need to log into Instagram to resize a photo?

No. You provide the image file directly, and resizing happens in your browser.
